Microbial Ecology & Biological Oceanography

Research in our lab focuses on two major areas, the diversity of microbial interactions and the diversity of microbes themselves. In the study of microbial interactions, we are examining the role of microbial symbioses in methane production in marine sediments. In the study of microbial diversity, we focus on a combination of morphological and molecular approaches to examine diversity of aquatic protists. We are also developing novel culture methods to isolate, describe, and eventually domesticate novel – and presently uncultivable - marine Bacteria and Archaea.
