Outreach Program Coordinator
B.S. University of Arizona
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
During my freshman year at the University of Arizona, I had the chance to attend a field trip to the Gulf of California to visit CEDO (Center for the Education of Deserts and Oceans), a marine research facility. As soon as I turned over the first intertidal rock and saw all the life on just one boulder, I knew I was sold to the field of marine biology. While I initially thought I wanted to get involved in the political aspects of marine conservation, I soon realized that I wanted to combine my two passions: working with children and preserving the ocean. To pursue this, I enrolled in an outreach course bringing 3-8th grade classes to the University to learn about marine biology. I also worked as a teaching assistant in an introductory marine ecology course at the University. In the summer of 2001, I participated in a marine biology internship at the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company in Portsmouth, NH. There I gained more experience in educating the public by giving whale watch tours and touch tank presentations. This was also my first aquarist training, building and maintaining the plumbing and electricity for the touch tank. After graduating with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in May 2002, I returned to the Steamship Company to work a season as a naturalist, followed by a year teaching middle school science back in my hometown of Yuma, AZ. The summer of 2003 was spent back in the NH area as Island Naturalist on Star Island, one of the nine Isles of Shoals. There I was fortunate to have the amazing experience of running the Rutledge Marine Lab, maintaining saltwater tanks and leading both children and adults on nature walks around the pristine island. Upon moving to Massachusetts in November of 2003, I worked for the Outreach Program at the New England Aquarium before starting this position in March of 2004. I have been at the MSC for nearly year now, and am very proud of and excited for the direction this program is headed!
