Planning a Career in Marine Sciences
If you’re one of those people looking to combine a future career in science with your love of the marine environment, New England offers a huge variety of opportunities in the marine sciences. Whether your interests focus on biotechnology, aquaculture, ecological research, environmental management, or fisheries biology, New England is the place to be.
Northeastern University offers a variety of academic programs for undergraduates and graduates interested in pursuing a career in the marine sciences. These programs support Northeastern’s international reputation for offering hands-on, practice-oriented learning experiences. In addition to great marine programs, Northeastern operates its own research lab, the Marine Science Center, just north of Boston, and is partnered with leading marine research institutions around the world.
Undergraduate Programs in Marine Science
Three Seas East West Marine Biology Program
Move beyond the confines of the traditional classroom and spend an exciting year of field and laboratory studies in three very different marine ecosystems in the United States and French Polynesia.
Marine Biology Concentration
The Marine Biology Concentration is designed to provide Biology Majors with a strong foundation in marine biology and related disciplines. The Concentration has a strong hands-on component involving course work.
Marine Biology Minor
The Marine Biology Minor is designed to provide Majors in disciplines other than Biology with a strong foundation in marine biology and related disciplines.
Marine Studies Minor
The Marine Studies Minor Program is designed to suit students from a range of academic backgrounds. The Minor program is loosely structured to allow personalizing courses, at least one marine studies course, mastery of a marine-related skill (i.e. SCUBA), and an independent project associated with the oceans.
Graduate Programs in Marine Biology
Northeastern University offers both M.S. and Ph.D programs in biology. Since 1967, over 100 masters and Ph.D. degrees have been awarded to students conducting research at MSC. Students enrolled in the graduate program take courses at MSC and on the main campus in Boston while conducting their thesis research at MSC.
