COSA is a 2-week long
summer marine science academy for incoming 9th or 10th grade students.
Goals
The goals of the program
are twofold: first, to expand the scientific literacy of high school students
beginning grades 9 or 10 using marine-based learning models that are aligned
with and enhance the learning standards of the Massachusetts State Curriculum
Frameworks for Science and Engineering & Technology (May 2001), and second,
to expand students’ awareness of the regional marine environment and how it is
influenced by human activities using a fun, hands-on science curriculum.
Program
The program is a
field-based hands-on experiential learning that explores the coastal marine
environment of Massachusetts. Activities include: This is different than the

and an award ceremony in Nahant. Food and activities will be provided.
Supervision
Northeastern University staff, trained both in science and pedagogy, supervises the academy. All content
taught during COSA aligns with the Massachusetts Frameworks for Science and
Technology/Engineering to ensure students are learning material valuable to
their academic schooling. Staff members ensure the students’ safety and guide
their activities for the duration of the program.
